Alberta rental laws are governed by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and disputes are handled by the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS).

Rent Increases in Alberta
While there is no limit on the amount rent can be increased, there are strict rules on frequency and notice.
- Frequency: Only once every 365 days
- Notice (Periodic Monthly): 3 tenancy months written notice
- Notice (Fixed Term): Not required, but rent cannot change during term
- New Tenants: Landlord can set any rate for new agreements
Security Deposit Rules
- Maximum: One month rent
- Storage: Must be in interest-bearing trust account (2 days)
- Interest: Must be paid to tenant (currently 0% per regulation)
- Inspections: Move-in and move-out reports mandatory for deductions
- Return Deadline: 10 days after tenant gives up possession
