Setting up your first property in RentMouse

A step-by-step guide to adding your first rental unit, configuring lease details, and getting ready to welcome tenants.

Welcome to RentMouse!

So, you've just signed up for RentMouse—congratulations! We're thrilled to have you on board. Managing properties can be a bit of a juggling act, but we've designed everything here to be as smooth and intuitive as possible.

Let's get your first property set up. It's the foundation for everything else you'll do in the app, from tracking expenses to generating leases.

Step 1: Navigate to the Properties Dashboard

Once you log in, you'll land on your main dashboard. Look for the Properties tab in the sidebar on the left side of your screen. If you're on mobile, tap the hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner first.

Click on the "Add Property" button—it's usually a prominent blue button at the top of the page.

Step 2: Enter the Property Details

We'll ask for the basics first:

  • Property Name: This is just for your reference. Something like "Main Street Duplex" or "Grandview Apartments" works great.
  • Street Address: The full street address of the property.
  • City: The city where the property is located.
  • State/Province: Select from the dropdown. This determines which lease templates and legal requirements apply.
  • Postal/ZIP Code: The postal or ZIP code.
  • Country: Canada or United States.

Pro tip: Be precise with the address! This is exactly what will appear on your lease agreements, tax documents, and any official correspondence.

Step 3: Add Units to Your Property

A "unit" in RentMouse is any rentable space. If you're renting out a single-family home, you just have one unit. But if you have a duplex, triplex, or apartment building, you'll add multiple units here.

Click "Add Unit" and fill in the details for each rentable space:

  • Unit Name/Number: e.g., "Main Floor", "Basement Suite", "Unit 101".
  • Bedrooms: How many bedrooms?
  • Bathrooms: Full baths, half baths—just put the total.
  • Square Footage: Optional, but tenants love knowing this.
  • Target Rent: What you expect to charge per month.

Step 4: Upload Photos

You don't have to do this right now, but uploading photos makes a huge difference:

  • Your dashboard looks more organized and professional.
  • If you list the unit for rent, the photos are already there.
  • It helps document the condition of the property at move-in.

You're Done!

That's it! You've successfully added your first property to RentMouse. Your property will now appear in your dashboard, and you can start adding tenants, creating leases, and tracking income and expenses.
