Licensing here depends on the ward
Hamilton ran a rental housing licensing pilot in Wards 1 and 8 and part of Ward 14, and in December 2025 Council approved a permanent programme beginning in those same wards, with expansion to be reported on later. It covers buildings or parts of buildings with five or fewer self-contained units, along with detached homes and townhouses. Licensing brings a property standards inspection and a fire safety inspection of each unit, so confirm which ward the address sits in before assuming the programme does or does not reach you.

Ontario rules that apply in Hamilton

- Rent deposit up to 1 month's rent; damage deposits are not allowed
- Deposit return / claim rule
- Only a rent deposit of up to one rental period is permitted. Damage and security deposits are not permitted; do not generate a security-deposit clause.
