Renting in Gatineau

One by-law covers sanitation, occupancy and upkeep

Gatineau's by-law 538-2023 on the sanitation, occupancy and maintenance of buildings sets the conditions that make a dwelling or rooming house fit to live in, and is also aimed at keeping buildings from falling into disrepair. City inspectors may visit and examine a property to enforce it, and the City can require an owner or a tenant to carry out repair or maintenance work, with fines for non-compliance. Anything that endangers the health or safety of occupants has to be corrected within a reasonable time, so the clock starts when the problem is known, not when it is convenient.
