Renting in Kansas City

A permit per unit, renewed on the calendar year

Kansas City's Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program, established by Ordinance 180248, requires rental property owners to register. Permits run the calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December, with a per-unit annual fee plus a one-time application fee, so a ten-unit building pays the application once and the unit fee ten times. A completed application has to go in before a new rental property opens, and again when ownership or management changes. That change-of-management trigger is the one worth noting if you ever hand a building to an agent.
