Leases, co-tenants and lease status
Connect tenants to a unit through a lease, add co-tenants who share it, and understand how RentMouse works out a lease's status.
When a tenancy starts, when someone joins or leaves it, and when it ends.

Create the lease record
A lease connects a tenant to a unit with the dates, rent, deposit and rent due day. It is the record invoices are generated from. The signed agreement is a separate document you can build from it.
Co-tenants
When several people share one agreement, add the others as co-tenants on the same lease rather than creating separate leases. Each co-tenant keeps their own tenant record and can have their own portal access.
How status is worked out
- Upcoming: the start date is still in the future.
- Active: today falls between the start and end dates, or the lease has no end date.
- Ended: the end date has passed.
- Because the status comes from the dates, you do not need to update it by hand.
Ending, cancelling and deleting
To record that a tenancy is finishing, confirm the lease end with its final date. Cancelling is for a lease that will not go ahead. A lease with no invoices, payments or documents can be deleted outright; once it has history, it is kept for your records.
